What this paper examines
Mazzolini and Maddison examine instructor participation in asynchronous discussions in an online astronomy programme. Posting frequency, discussion initiation, student participation and student perceptions do not move together in a simple way. More instructor activity was not automatically associated with more student posts. The study encourages a more careful assessment of discussion quality than counting contributions or assuming that frequent intervention is always better.
A question to take into course design
What evidence would show that a discussion supports learning, beyond the number of messages posted?
